December 2024

What a pleasure it was for us to have been a part of the Authors at JCPL this year. Our evening at the remarkable—some say haunted—Historic Artcraft Theater in September was a highlight for us both, a delightful opportunity to meet hundreds of JCPL patrons. And now, we’re honored to be the co-chairs of the fifth annual Snuggle Up with a Book Ball on February 22, 2025. Without the support of this event, our visit and the visits of other bestselling authors wouldn’t be possible.

The JCPL Foundation’s Snuggle Up with a Book Ball is unique – no black-tie attire, no strained cocktail party conversation, no auctions! You can participate from the comfort of your own home. All that’s required is for you to indulge in what you love—just sit and read. You can do it alone or invite your friends over for an evening of reading together cozied up before a warm fire. We understand many will be saving their energy for a night out on February 23, the Indiana and Purdue men’s basketball game, so this is a prudent night to stay in and protect your vocal cords. Just register, donate, and enjoy.

The free access to books and public information that libraries offer us is one of the cornerstones of our democracy. Our libraries house literature that is so important in helping us understand ourselves and our relationship to one another and to the world. They are the archives of our culture, and we believe that it’s our responsibility to support them in any way we can. The Snuggle Up with a Book Ball is one of those ways. As co-chairs, we hope to inspire you to support Authors at JCPL.

Literature is an art form that begs for conversation. Those of us who write books love the opportunity to talk with readers, to share our ideas and listen to theirs. When we visited as part of the 2024 Authors at JCPL, we had the delightful opportunity to spend time talking personally with so many of those who came to the event, answering their questions and posing a few of our own. It was an unforgettable evening for us and, we hope, for those who attended.

By supporting the library’s Authors at JCPL series, you’re investing in the growth of literacy and creativity in your community. Please help JCPL foster a culture of reading. This isn’t a small cause: research demonstrates that reading increases empathy, promotes social mobility, and creates a greater sense of opportunity. Meanwhile, the National Endowment for the Arts reports a decline in pleasure reading among children from 53% in 2012 to only 39% in 2022, the most recent year of data. We won’t tell you what to read…we ask only that you help spread the love of literature that has been so good to us, personally, and to us all, as a society.

Participate by yourself, with family, friends, book club members, or perhaps a literary-inclined pet. In whatever way and wherever you choose, we invite you to snuggle up on February 22—just register, donate, and read. The request is simple, the rewards immense.

Sincerely,
